School is back in full swing and my girls are absolutely loving Kindergarten. Sure, my days have been freed up to spend some quality time with my son, but I have also been looking for fun ways to reinforce the educational benchmarks at home with the girls. Making homework fun can be as easy as making a game out of it.
My kids were tasked with learning 10 sight words and 6 letters, both uppercase and lowercase. Drilling them with flash cards and handwriting practice was getting me nowhere. One day, after school, one of my girls was asking me to play the memory game for the hundredth time.
That is when it hit me, why not turn her favorite game into an educational experience. It only took me 15 minutes to make two memory games of my own. One featured one uppercase and one lowercase card of each letter on their list while the other featured pairs of their sight words. It was easier than you may think. I will walk you through the steps.
Supplies:
- Thick Cardstock with a Fun Graphic on One Side
- Paper Cutter
- Marker
- Ziplock Baggie
Step 1:
Using your paper cutter, cut your card stock into equal squares. I used 12 inch by 12 inch card stock and cut it down to 2 inch squares but if you need them slightly bigger, do 3 inch squares instead.
Step 2:
Write the letters, numbers, or words that you are practicing with your child on the back of the cards, making sure to do two of each one.
Step 3:
Lay out the cards on the table, gather your kids around, and play a fun and educational game of memory.
Mine were geared toward Kindergarten learning but you could easily apply this same technique to anything your children have to memorize.
