Benefits of Teak

Teak is a very dense wood, which is why it is so ideal for outdoor use. It is also pest-resistant, meaning that it will not be susceptible to the damage pests can cause to other types of wood, such as pine. This wood can come in a wide range of colors, from very pale to rich and dark. Furniture made out of teak generally costs more, but it is a savings in the long run because it will be part of your home for many years to come, it may even last long enough to be passed down to future generations.

Finishing Options

If left unfinished, teak will naturally turn a gray color as time goes on. This does not affect the integrity of the wood in any way, it simply gives the piece a naturally weathered look. While teak is strong enough to be left completely untreated, some people choose to treat their teak to either change the color of the wood or to prevent the wood from turning gray with time.

  • Sealing
One of the most common finishing options is that of sealing the teak furniture. A layer of sealer will help to lock in the initial color of the teak and prevent it from graying or silvering over time. Sealer is effective in preventing color change because it offers UV protection for the wood. When sealing your teak furniture, be sure to follow manufacturer instructions.
  • Painting
Teak is a natural wood and as such, teak furniture can be painted, but why cover up the natural wood grain and rich color of teak? Save the painting for less expensive pine furniture and let teak shine with its own beauty.
  • Restoring
If you have a piece of teak furniture that has already turned gray or silver and you want to restore it to its original color, you are in luck. There are many teak restoration products on the market that will allow you to do just that. These are a two-step process that uses acid to restore the teak to it’s natural beauty.

Cleaning

Although teak is virtually maintenance free, you may want to clean it on occasion. If your teak has been sealed, mild soap and water should do the job. If your teak is not sealed, purchase a teak cleaner. Teak cleaners will remove food stains from your wood but they will also strip away sealers so they should not be used on sealed teak furniture.
