Hide Trashcans and Boost Curb Appeal

Most Home Owner Association rules clearly state that you are not allowed to have your trash and recycling bins visible from the street. Unfortunately, storing them in your garage just brings that trash smell into an otherwise very usable area of your home. If you are looking to get these messy and stinky receptacles out of your garage and still within HOA guidelines, here are some great solutions for you.

Artificial Hedge

Increase curb appeal and hide trashcans simultaneously. Hedges that extend from the right and left side of your house will look stunning from the street and hide your water spouts, power boxes, and other unsightly elements from your side yard. Real hedges can take time to grow and trim. Once they are shaped, they require constant pruning and can even invite unwanted animals. Avoid these problems by using artificial hedges instead.

Place the artificial hedge perpendicular to your exterior wall and simply place your trashcans and recycling bins behind it. Calculate how many hedges you need based on how many receptacles you wish to conceal.

Trellis Screen

A trellis screen is another ideal option for concealing those trashcans from view. Anchor one end of the screen to the exterior wall to prevent it from blowing over. For added stability, dig a short trench in the ground the same footprint of the screen and anchor it down a couple of inches. Once the screen is in place you can train growing vines or delicious grapes to climb the trellis.

If you don’t want to wait for nature to grow on its own, skip right to the results by securing flowering ivy mats to the exterior of the trellis. Another option is to purchase artificial vines and winding them through the trellis. Not only do they hold up for outdoor use, but they are completely maintenance-free.
