If you are like me, you probably have a standard concrete walkway that leads from your driveway right up to your front door. While these concrete walkways are very functional, they are far from beautiful. Today, we are going to talk about three ideas for adding beauty to these paths and enhancing the curb appeal of your home at the same time.
Line them with Pavers
If your walkway is laid in straight lines with 90-degree turns it is ideal for this application. Purchase small square or rectangular pavers from your local home improvement store. Measure the width of the pavers and remove enough grass on either side of the walkway to accommodate the pavers. Line both sides of the walkway with your pavers, making sure that the pavers and the walkway are level with one another. If you love this look, take it one step farther by also lining your driveway with the pavers.
Line them with Artificial Flowers
Not all walkways feature straight lines. Some are curved and meandering, like mine. If this sounds like your walkway, it is the perfect candidate for artificial flowers. Remove a width of grass on either side of your walkway, I recommend 8 inches to 1 foot. Once you are down to the dirt, go ahead and place outdoor artificial plants into the ground, packing their stems in tightly to secure them. There are many different types of outdoor artificial plants to choose from, including azalea bushes, grass sprays, and even small boxwoods. Once you have lined both sides of your walkway with evenly spaced artificial plants, go ahead and add a layer of your favorite mulch to finish the look.
Line them with River Rocks
River rocks are incredibly popular, especially in places like Arizona that have an arid desert climate. Pay tribute to the use of river rocks in your surroundings by lining your walkway with them. Dig out a width of grass or dirt on either side of the walkway and lay down a barrier fabric to prevent weeds from sprouting up. Then lay down a nice, thick layer of your favorite river rocks.
Enhance the look by purchasing an assortment of larger rocks and randomly placing them in among the smaller ones. A family friend of ours has done this application on the walkway leading from their back porch to their pool and have written a city and a year on the larger rocks, representing the vacations they took as a family over the year. They literally walk through their history as a family every time they walk through their back yard.
Try one of these walkway designs out for yourself and be sure to send us pictures of your before and after. We would love to see what you have come up with.
