Tomorrow is officially the first day of summer. For most regions, that means that you can say goodbye to the daily showers and droughts are on the horizon. Make sure that you have a garden that will stand up to the strain that drought season can cause by using a combination of artificial outdoor plants and drought-tolerant plants.
Combining Real and Fake Plants
When you are deciding where to use artificial plants and where to use real plants, think about your space plan. Synthetic plants are a great option for areas that receive direct sunlight or areas, which are hard to access for pruning. When you layer both fake and real flowers together the look becomes seamless. You also don’t have to worry about whether or not the two types of plants will work well together because the fake ones won’t steal nutrients or water from the soil during times of drought.
Artificial Plants
Look at the most manicured aspect of your landscape. These are great opportunities to take advantage of the maintenance-free nature of synthetic plants. Add some large boxwood hedges and perfectly shaped cedar trees instead of the real deal and cut down on hours of labor-intensive yard work.
Real Flowers
You can’t beat the smell that beautiful flowering plants offer. When you do choose to use real plants, consider fragrant varieties that are extra hardy. Go for something that will look great with relatively little upkeep, such as lavender, Mojave sage, and yarrow. Other drought-tolerant flowers include geraniums, pansies, marigolds and verbena. When you are picking real flowers for your garden, make sure you know what hardiness zone you live in and that you purchase plants that are suitable for that region.
