We recently started carrying the beautiful Low Country line of patio furniture by Lloyd Flanders and as I looked through this incredible collection, it got me thinking about the inspiration for the line. The term Low Country may be extremely familiar to you or completely foreign, depending upon where you live. This term is given to the coastal region of South Carolina, especially the historic city of Charleston.
Charleston was settled back in 1663. This region was completely dependent on agriculture and sits at sea level. Because of the lifestyle there, much of life was spent outdoors. It is hard to find a traditional home in this region that does not have a massive porch, sunroom, or screened area. Come evening, families gather in these outdoor spaces to talk, visit, and enjoy outdoor dining.
These outdoor spaces are decorated every bit as thoughtfully as indoor spaces, with porch swings, rocking chairs, and outdoor sofas an absolute must. Black and cream are natural paint finishes for this furniture, along with natural wood stains. Even the fabrics chosen to decorate these southern homes reflect the outdoors, often featuring florals, stripes, or beach-inspired patterns in shades of creams, greens, and blues. Because of the age of this city, the trees are massive and covered in beautiful spanish moss, which is quite frequently the view from these porches.
I have personally had he pleasure of visiting the Charleston area many times and every time we go, I fall in love with the style all over again. Low Country style is unique because it combines traditional style lines with coastal inspiration. Weaving is a huge element of design in the Low Country and handmade woven baskets are a popular home accessory. I was so impressed with how this line by Lloyd Flanders so perfectly captures the traditional southern charm of the Low Country. What would be a better way of spending an evening than enjoying a cold beverage on this beautiful screened deck?
