5 Things to Remember When Entertaining Poolside

A pool is a beautiful backdrop for for your summer entertaining, but whether the pool is part of the festivities or just a decoration, there are several things to consider when preparing for your party.

Furniture Placement

It is important to provide several seating areas around your pool.  I like to combine three different heights of tables and chairs.  Bar height tables and stools provide seating while offering a comfortable place to put food and drinks for guests who like to stand.  A patio dining table and chairs is convenient, especially if a meal is being served, and lounge chairs and side tables offer casual seating.  All outdoor furniture groupings should be at least 3 feet from the pool edge to give your guests space to move around.

Table Settings

Special consideration must be given to the plates and glasses being used.  Broken glass in a pool is difficult to clean up.  At the least, a thorough vacuuming is necessary. Because broken glass can damage pool pumps and filters, sometimes a pool must be drained completely before cleaning the glass.  To avoid these complications, it is best to keep glass away from the pool deck.  There are beautiful acrylic glasses and stemware for more formal parties, while plastic plates and cups are fine for an informal get together.  It is also important to use acrylic serving pieces and pitchers.

Pool Activities

If the pool is going to be used during the party, there are several things you should do before the festivities. Make sure you have an ample supply of towels for your guests.  If the party is during the day, have sunscreen prominently displayed.  Decide ahead of time if pool floats or toys are to be allowed, and either have them handy or store them out of sight.  Make sure children in the pool are monitored at all times.

Food and Beverages

If a cooler of beverages is used, make sure the beverages are in cans instead of glass bottles.  Acrylic pitchers of punch or lemonade can be conveniently located.  When planning your menu, think finger foods.  They are less messy and easier to eat when walking around.  Consider placing the food on an outdoor sideboard or buffet.

Setting a Mood

Whether you are planning a formal party or an informal picnic, there are several ways to set the mood.  Tablecloths and centerpieces help define your party.  For evening parties, use many different light sources.  The pool light adds a nice glow to the water.  Candles and lanterns are another attractive addition.  Strings of lights in trees or along the roof line can also be used to add a festive feel.  Cover the scent of chlorine with candles or pots of fragrant flowers.  Blue tooth speakers are a convenient way to bring music outdoors without the need for dangerous cords.
A pool is a wonderful addition to your home.  Feature it the next time you plan a get together. Entertaining poolside is a time honored summer tradition but these steps are essential to successful gatherings.
