It was a very busy yet very exciting weekend in the Reynolds household this weekend. We tore out all our scraggly old hedges and flowers and decided to replace them with a variety of artificial plants. The decision to make the switch to artificial outdoor plants was one that I had been considering for a long time and there were many different reasons for our switch.
Fight My Allergies
To start, I am allergic to virtually every plant under the sun. The spring and summer wreak havoc on my sinuses, a condition that is made even worse any time I get down and dirty in the garden. By pulling out my real plants and replacing them with artificial outdoor plants, I am drastically cutting down on the pollen output in my yard.
No Time To Garden
Not only am I basically allergic to the outdoors, but I also have three children ages 5 and under. This basically means that having time to tend to my flower beds is a luxury I simply don’t have. Once artificial plants are in place, they are basically maintenance free. Just top off your mulch occasionally and you will have a garden that looks like it is impeccably maintained.
Enhance Curb Appeal
I live in the ultra hot climate of Florida and this past winter we had a lot more frosts than usual. My warm weather plants did not respond well and I lost the vast majority of the bushes and flowers in my flower bed. Since I had to replace a bunch of plants anyway, it was the ideal time to choose high quality synthetic plants. In just one weekend, my front yard went from an eyesore to one of the prettiest houses on the block. As a homeowner that takes pride in my property and wants it to look nice, curb appeal is very important to me.
No Climate Restrictions
By going with faux flowers, I no longer have to adhere to the specific light, soil, water, and climate requirements of flowers and plants. I can plant anything I find visually appealing anywhere I want, regardless of proximity to the house or how hot our summers get.
Everyone has their own lists of needs when it comes to landscaping but chances are, the use of artificial plants meets most of those needs. If you aren’t ready to go with all artificials, why not use a combination of artificial plants and real plants together? Artificial plants don’t have root systems that can damage foundations or walkways but using them in among natural plants only makes them look more natural themselves.
