Old wood pallets aren’t just for shipping anymore. Environmentally conscious handymen and women nationwide have recently been using pallets that are destined for the trash and breathing new life into them by reworking the wood into brand new items. Creating wood pallet furniture is not only inexpensive, it is also an environmentally friendly way of furnishing your deck.
This weekend, I took my family to the Museum of Science and History, which had recently added an exhibit about recycling and environmental responsibility. The beginning of this wonderful exhibit featured a sofa, two chairs, and a coffee table, all made out of old wood pallets.
The simple straight lines and unaltered look of the wood panels gives the whole set an authentic and rustic look that celebrates the natural beauty in the materials. These pallets aren’t just a great way to build custom outdoor furniture, they are also a great starting material for homemade trellises, benches, planter boxes, and more. The natural wood would be a perfect accent to your many outdoor plants.
Many shipping center and industrial office buildings discard a great number of wood pallets every day. Even if they have been stacked next to the dumpster, it is important to call the business and ask if you can take their discarded pallets. They may even tell you which days they take their extra pallets out to the dumpsters.
If you set out to make your own patio furniture out of wood pallets, make sure to send us the pictures of the finished results. We would love to post your handiwork on our blog. Happy building!
