How to Style a Bookcase

As more and more people buy e-readers instead of books, the dilemma for many homeowners becomes how to style a bookcase with fewer books. Instead of letting it become a dumping ground for mail and other papers, a few simple design tips can make your bookcase a focal point.

Getting Started

According to Elizabeth Mayhew of the Washington Post, the first step in styling a bookcase is removing everything. Sort the books by size and subject matter. Purchase attractive storage boxes for papers and mail.

Placing Books

When placing books back on the shelves, stack them both vertically and horizontally for visual interest. Create a pattern with the books by lining them up according to size. Spread the grouping of books evenly throughout the bookshelves. You can fill in empty spaces with photos, collections, and plants.

Adding Interest

To break up the monotony of the books, add ceramics, art, and collections to the shelves. Personalize your bookcase with photographs leaning against a stack of books. For a modern look, hang a photograph or work of art on the front of the bookcase.

Add Color with Artificial Plants

Artificial plants are the perfect accessories for a bookcase. They add visual interest and a nice pop of color to the shelves. Since they don’t need water or sunlight, they are the perfect low-maintenance way to fill in the visual gaps. Long horizontal plants can fill entire shelves. Consider small potted plants for tighter spaces. Books stacked horizontally can create a pedestal and add height to a small plant. With a little rearranging, your bookcase can become a focal point of any room.
