It’s strong, it’s renewable, and most of all, it’s beautiful. Bamboo is an on-trend material in design because it is so versatile. It can be seen in everything from furniture to flooring and for good reason. Whether you are remodeling the inside of your home or looking for a quick addition to your landscape, check out the benefits of this Asian plant.
Flooring
Bamboo is considered a renewable resource because it grows at such a quick rate. That fast growth rate, paired with its strength and flexibility has made it a great alternative to traditional hardwood floors. If you are considering ripping up your old flooring, consider replacing it with beautiful bamboo. It is around the same price as hardwoods and is a much greener choice for the eco-conscious.
Natural Barrier
Because of its fast growth and exotic appearance, bamboo is a popular landscape plant. According to the American Bamboo Society, there are over 1400 species of the plant. It is native to East Asia, Northern Australia, sub-Sahara Africa, and North and South America and can grow in climates ranging from cold mountains to hot tropical regions.
When using bamboo plants outdoors, consider the desired location when selecting a species to plant. To encourage quick growth, most species prefer full sun. Mulch the soil and make sure the plants get plenty of water. Because running plants can be very invasive, you will need to control the spread of the plants by installing barriers at least 30 inches deep. If you want a barrier that is much prettier than a fence, consider this plant.
Decorative Plant
If you want the drama of a beautiful bamboo plant without the upkeep, consider artificial bamboo. They come in several varieties and sizes and can be used both indoors and outdoors. Shine an uplight or spotlight on the plant for added interest at night. These plants add a touch of drama to any home or yard.
